How We Use Local Storage & Session Data
A transparent and honest approach to data storage at Breath Technology
Our Commitment to Your Privacy
At Breath Technology, our ethos is based on Truth. We believe in complete transparency about how we store and use data on your device. Your privacy is of utmost importance to us, and we never sell your data. We use minimal local storage and session data purely and securely for your benefit.
What We Actually Use (It's Not Cookies)
You may have noticed that we don't actually use traditional cookies for logged-in users. Instead, we use your browser's local storage for a better, more secure experience:
- token - Your secure authentication token
- cookieConsent - Your cookie consent preference
- cookieConsentDate - When you gave consent
- cookieConsentDetails - Specific consent details
- card - Secure payment method reference
You won't find any Cache Storage, Session Storage, or traditional Cookies in your browser's developer tools for our domain - and that's intentional.
Why We Chose Local Storage Over Cookies
We prefer local storage because it's more secure and efficient:
- More Secure: Local storage data never gets sent to the server automatically
- Larger Capacity: 5-10MB vs 4KB limit for cookies
- Better Performance: No network overhead for data transmission
- Fine-grained Control: We can manage specific data items independently
What Each Storage Item Does
Authentication Token (token)
This securely identifies you to our servers. Without it, you'd need to log in on every page visit. It's automatically cleared when you log out.
Consent Preferences (cookieConsent, cookieConsentDate, cookieConsentDetails)
These remember your privacy preferences so we don't repeatedly ask you to consent. They help us comply with privacy laws while reducing annoyance.
Payment Reference (card)
This securely references your payment method for faster checkout. No actual card details are stored here - just a reference to securely stored payment methods.
Our Analytics Approach
We use Matomo Analytics (self-hosted) to understand how visitors use our site. When enabled, Matomo uses first-party cookies:
- _pk_id* - Used to store a few details about the user's visit
- _pk_ref* - Used to store the attribution information
- _pk_ses* - Short lived cookie to temporarily store data
- _pk_cvar - Stores custom variables
- _pk_hsr* - Stores the time a user spends on the site
These are the ONLY cookies we set, and only if you've consented to analytics. You can disable them at any time.
Your Complete Control
You have complete control over all data we store:
- Clear Local Storage: Use your browser's developer tools to clear all local storage
- Block Cookies: Configure your browser to block all cookies (including Matomo's)
- Log Out: Clears your authentication token and related session data
- Cookie Consent: Manage your preferences anytime via our consent banner
Note: Clearing local storage will log you out and remove your preferences, but it won't affect any data we securely store on our servers.
What Happens When You Disable Storage
We're honest about the trade-offs because your experience matters:
- You'll need to log in every visit
- Your preferences won't be remembered
- Checkout process may take longer
- Some personalized features may be unavailable
- Site performance might be slightly reduced
But your data remains completely private - we never track or sell your information regardless of your settings.
Security Measures
We implement robust security for all local storage:
- Authentication tokens are encrypted and time-limited
- No sensitive data (like passwords) is stored in local storage
- Regular security audits and updates
- All server communication is encrypted via HTTPS
- Automatic token refresh for continued security
No Third-Party Tracking
We maintain our commitment to your privacy:
- We don't use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party trackers
- Our Matomo instance is self-hosted and data never leaves our servers
- We don't share, sell, or rent any data to advertisers
- We don't participate in cross-site tracking or behavioral advertising
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
